Your stories… our worlds!

Our game worlds are like other tabletop roleplaying games, where you play the character in a story and your decisions affect the outcome of that story. Unlike other roleplaying games, our programs intertwine the stories of many players and game groups into one consistent world – expanding adventure to an epic scale.

Our game masters have decades of experience creating compelling and exciting storytelling for people of all ages and interests. Join with friends and become the heroes of a world in peril, discover lost secrets, and perhaps even change the course of history.

We offer several groups for youth and adults, using a variety of game systems. Story arcs are geared to the age of the players, and are fast paced and dangerous, entangling the characters in the greater machinations of each game world.

Please call (510.654.3582) or send us an email if you have questions or would like to enroll.

How Does it Work?

If you’re not familiar with tabletop roleplaying games, there are several people needed to play. One is the Game Master (GM), who is responsible for running the game. He or she will create the adventure, control the flow of the game, interpret the rules, and play the roles of all the people the players will meet.

The players like you control their own characters (called Player Characters, or PCs). Your character is like a character in a book, complete with a personality, physical description, and skills. Some of these are determined by numbers, such as their STATS (short for statistics) and skills. The rest are only limited by your imagination. Two players could both be playing the same type of character, but play them entirely differently. That is part of the fun of a tabletop roleplaying game – using your imagination to create a unique and memorable character.

Game Worlds

We run games using four different game worlds. For each game world, our Game Masters design unique settings that are truly responsive the the players’ actions. Unlike commercial, pre-packaged modules, Abantey, and our other game worlds, are living worlds where each group’s campaign is a created through a symbiosis of the player and the game master. Thirty years of world and material creation results in a uniquely vivid and immersive experience.

Each of our games has a unique blog page following the story action.

Abantey  (spaces available – all ages)

Thousands of years ago, seven Creators – beings of immense knowledge and power – founded the world of Abantey. Each shaped a land and people that was a reflection of their Ways. Os’Baluud whispered of forests tall and broad, animals and people living in harmony. Os’Feesha wove a tale of pleasure and relaxation. Os’Gnihton hailed a world of ever-changing life. Os’Plajet jabbered of tricks, wonders and feats to make all laugh. Os’Sakeet roared of honor, combat, and heroes. Os’Ta’as muttered of rigorous inquiry and amazing discoveries. Os’Wa’la detailed a land and people dedicated to hardship.

The peoples of Abantey are divided between those who are Marked – those who follow the Ways of their Creator – or Rogue – those who have broken away from the Creators’ Ways and seek to forge their own future. You play an adventurer, the brave and talented few that the Creator Temples and Rogue Guilds rely on to protect innocent common folk, handle sensitive missions, and solve mysteries and crimes.

Abantey is the game world that has been the heart of The Roleplay Workshop for more than 28 years. The world and game system of Abantey were conceived to focus on physical, biological, and cultural realism – something many other game systems avoid – while still pushing the boundaries of imagination and creativity that are the hallmark of tabletop roleplaying games.

This game uses the Abantey Game System, designed by Becky Thomas.

Apoc-Abantey   (spaces available – age 21+)

The Creators and their stars have fallen from the sky. The Guilds are in full collapse. Coastal trade cities are ravaged by tsunami. Mountains weep fire and brimstone. The sky fills with ash. Those who survive wonder why – how could this happen? Which of the Creators still live, and what will they do now? Who will rise to power to save Abantey, or ruin it?

It’s up to the few remaining intrepid adventurers to find an answer to these questions while saving the desperate survivors from threats on all sides. Meanwhile, in the forgotten corners of the world… ancient entities stir… finding opportunity in catastrophe. Some whisper that there are even worse things coming…

This is an alternate, apocalyptic timeline of the Abantey Game Universe. These campaigns involve serious, mature themes and are designed specifically for adults.

This game uses the Abantey Game System, designed by Becky Thomas.

Legacy of Krenn  (spaces available – age 21+)

Steve’s world fuses the classic elements of fantasy – elves, humans, and orcs – with the machinations of Gods and Churches living and forgotten. In a time of brewing war between nation-states, the undead have returned! Agents of the nobility have forged a common purpose with agents of the Church of Honor and Justice, to hunt down those responsible, and put down the forces of darkness.

Steve’s World was originally ‘burned’ using the Burning Wheel fantasy role-playing game independently written and published by Luke Crane, a game system perfect for a skilled GM to use to creating their own gaming world.

This game is currently using the Pathfinder game system.

Cyberpunk (available by request)

Becky’s Cyberpunk games are set in the near future of the Bay Area. The setting explores the growing inequity between the haves and the have nots, the conflicts between corporations, and the emergence of genetic abnormalities in humans. There are rumors that there is a connection between Becky’s Cyberpunk, Abantey, and Serenity settings.

Cyberpunk is the original roleplaying game of the dark future — a world of corporate assassins, heavy-metal heroes and brain burning hackers packed with cutting edge technology and intense urban action. The future never looked so bad — but you, the ultimate Cyberpunk, can change it!

We use the original game system of Cyberpunk 2020, by Mike Pondsmith, with house rules to fit our current technological trajectory.

Serenity (available by request)

Here’s How It Is… The Earth got used up, and we found a new solar system and used terraforming technology to create hundreds of new Earths. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided that all worlds should unite under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the Unification War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control.

Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies. A ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain’s goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.

The Serenity Role Playing Game lets you recreate the action of the ‘Verse, the science-fiction setting created by writer/director Joss Whedon. Fly a ship out in the black, take jobs as they come, and always make sure you get paid.

We use the original Serenity game system by Jamie Chambers & Margaret Weis, with some house rules, of course.
